Before you start
Three things need to be true, and it's much less painful to check them now than mid-install.
- Your phone supports eSIM — check the manufacturer's official list, linked at the bottom of this page.
- Your phone is carrier-unlocked. A locked device will refuse a profile from another carrier.
- You're on Wi-Fi or an existing data connection. The profile is downloaded, not typed in.
The standard sequence
Whether it's your main line or a travel data line, the flow is the same. You'll have received either a QR code, a manual activation code, or an in-app prompt from the provider.
- 1. Open your phone's cellular or mobile network settings and choose to add an eSIM or cellular plan.
- 2. Scan the QR code you were emailed, or choose manual entry and paste the activation code.
- 3. Wait for the profile to download — usually well under a minute.
- 4. Label the line something you'll recognize: "S Mobile", "Japan trip", "Work".
- 5. Choose what the line is used for: calls, texts, mobile data, or data-only.
- 6. If it's a second line, set which line is your default for data and whether data switching is allowed.
Activating a travel eSIM the right way
Install it at home, before you fly, while you have reliable Wi-Fi. This is the single most important tip on this page — installing requires internet, and airports abroad are a bad place to discover that.
Leave the line switched off after installing. It stays dormant, and most travel plans start their validity window when the line first connects to a network in the destination, not when you buy. Switch it on after you land.
Keep your home line in the phone but turn its data off, so you don't pick up roaming charges by accident. Calls and texts on your home number keep working over Wi-Fi.
When activation fails
Most failures come down to four causes, and they're all fixable.
- "Unable to add cellular plan" — usually no internet, or the QR code has already been used. A profile can only be installed once.
- The phone rejects the profile — the device is likely still carrier-locked. Request an unlock from the carrier it was bought from.
- Installed but no service abroad — the line may not be switched on yet, or data roaming for that specific line is off. Both are toggles in the line's settings.
- Installed but nothing works at all — check you're not out of the plan's covered country list, then contact whoever sold you the plan.
Deleting and moving profiles
Don't delete a profile you might still need — deleting is permanent, and the original QR code will not reinstall it. You'd have to get a replacement from the provider.
When you upgrade phones, use the built-in eSIM transfer flow during setup if both devices support it. Otherwise, ask your carrier to reissue the profile to the new device before wiping the old one.
Frequently asked questions
How long does eSIM activation take?
The install itself typically takes under a minute on a decent Wi-Fi connection. Allow a few extra minutes for labeling the line and setting which line handles data.
Can I activate an eSIM without Wi-Fi?
You need some internet connection. If your phone already has another active line with data, that works. With no connection at all, the profile can't be downloaded.
Can I use the same eSIM QR code twice?
No. An eSIM QR code is single-use. Once the profile is installed, the code is spent — if you delete the profile you'll need a replacement from the provider.
Should I activate my travel eSIM before or after I land?
Install before you fly, activate after you land. Installing needs Wi-Fi, and most travel plans begin their validity period when the line first connects in the destination country.
Will activating a travel eSIM cancel my normal plan?
No. A travel eSIM is an additional line on the phone. Your existing line stays installed and your number stays reachable — most people just turn off data on the home line while abroad.
